Panel replacement versus service upgrade
Replacing a panel enclosure is not always the same as increasing the electrical service. A service upgrade can involve the meter base, service conductors, mast, grounding, utility connection and other equipment beyond the panel. We identify which components are customer-owned, what has to change and whether Toronto Hydro coordination is required. Clear terminology prevents a homeowner from assuming a panel swap automatically creates more available capacity.
Capacity begins with a load calculation
Breaker positions do not prove that a service can support new loads. Heating, cooking, water heating, air conditioning, EV charging and suite loads must be considered together. A calculation can show whether capacity is available, whether an energy-management device is appropriate or whether the service should be increased. Future plans matter: a homeowner expecting a heat pump and EV should discuss both before choosing the smallest immediate solution.
Existing equipment and access conditions
Panel brand, age, condition, clear working space and circuit labelling affect the scope. Share clear photos of the panel with the door closed, the directory, the meter area and the route between them, without removing covers. The site visit can then confirm conductor sizes, grounding, service layout and any conditions hidden from photos. Finished basements, shared driveways and overhead service locations may add access or restoration considerations.
Planned shutdowns and utility timing
Panel and service work usually requires a controlled outage. We tell you the expected outage window up front, who handles disconnection and reconnection, and what happens if the utility identifies extra requirements. Homes with medical equipment, sump pumps, freezers or remote workers should plan for the interruption. Larger projects may require advance design approval or equipment lead time before an installation date can be confirmed.
Closeout details that matter
After the work, the panel directory should be accurate and legible. Required inspection steps should be complete, unused openings closed and the work area left safe. Keep our invoice, ECRA/ESA licence information and any notification or certificate documentation, equipment model details and warranty information. Keep those records with the home’s renovation file for insurance, resale and future troubleshooting.
